This is Gloria Cooper's debut CD, in which she has put together a group of songs that have a cool jazz, mellow and relaxed feeling. Day By Day contains well-known standards as well as a selection of seldom heard jazz compositions written by some of America's finest musicians. Gloria Cooper has extensive experience as a singer/pianist as this CD plainly shows. Day By Day has character in the expressions of a cool jazz singer who also accompanies herself.
Gloria Cooper grew up in Missouri and began playing the piano at the age of 5. She attended the University of Missouri where she completed her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music. Cooper spent the years 1972-1988 in San Francisco where she played for 12 years at the Hyatt on Union Square and worked in a number of jazz clubs with many musicians, including Eddie Henderson. She also played in the house band of the re-opened Jazz Workshop where she accompanied Eddie Harris, Red Holloway, David "Fathead" Newman, Jimmy Witherspoon, and others. Gloria moved to New York in 1988 and completed an Ed. D in music and education from Teachers College, Columbia University, in 1992. She has performed in many venues in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Currently she is teaching at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York, where she is Assistant professor of Music.
